The National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012–2016 provide a statutory basis for the vetting of persons carrying out relevant work with children or vulnerable persons. The Act also creates offences and penalties for persons who fail to comply with its provisions. The Act stipulates that a relevant organisation shall not permit any person to undertake relevant work or activities on behalf of the organisation, unless the organisation receives a vetting disclosure from the National Vetting Bureau in respect of that person. Garda vetting is conducted on behalf of registered organisations only and is not conducted for individual persons on a personal basis.
The Western Diocesan Vetting Office carries out vetting for the six dioceses of the Western Province. Each diocese in the Western Province is committed to ensuring that all people who are employed or engaged as volunteers within the respective dioceses act according to the highest standards in all aspects of their roles and responsibilities. Vetting is required for all clergy, religious and volunteers within diocesan settings; and ancillary staff and volunteers in primary schools whose work consists of having access to or contact with children or vulnerable adults on a regular basis.

- Proof of Identity: 100-point ID check. The Garda National Vetting Bureau requires organisations to verify the name, date of birth, and current address of the applicant, and to provide photographic ID. This means at least two different forms of identification, one of which must include the applicant's photograph.
